Why half your leads say "Direct", and what is underneath
By the MarqIQ operations team · Updated
The short answer
"Direct" means the tool could not determine where the visit came from. In B2B the usual causes are expired cookies on return visits, redirects that strip UTM parameters, forms hosted on a different domain from the landing page, links opened from apps that send no referrer, and contacts created by import or integration. Most of it is recoverable once first touch is stored on the server and written to the contact record.
Direct is an absence
When a board deck says 45% of leads came from Direct, read it as "we lost the source on 45% of leads". A few of those people did type the URL. Most were sent by something: a newsletter, a Slack thread, an analyst note, an ad clicked a month ago. The attribution failed, and the report shows that failure as if it were a channel.
The causes, in the order we would fix them
This order comes from auditing CRM databases. It runs from the cause that usually hides the most leads down to the least.
- Return visits after cookie expiry. Safari limits script-written cookies to seven days. The buyer who clicked your ad on day one and converts on day twenty arrives with no memory of the ad.
- Redirects that drop the query string. Vanity URLs, link shorteners, a www to non-www hop, a consent wall. Test every paid landing URL end to end and look at what survives.
- Forms on another domain. A scheduling tool, an embedded iframe or a checkout subdomain starts a fresh session with no UTMs and no cookie.
- App and dark-social traffic. Links opened from Slack, Teams, WhatsApp, mobile mail clients and most podcast apps carry no referrer. Only tagged links fix this.
- Contacts that never touched the website. List imports, event scans, sales-created records and integration syncs. These are genuinely sourceless online and should be labelled by how they were created, not lumped into Direct.
- Hidden fields missing from some forms. There is always an old landing page form nobody added them to.
Measure before you fix
Pull field completeness for source across the whole contact base, then split it by create date and by form. The shape tells you the cause. A steady 40% gap everywhere points at cookies and redirects. A cliff on one date points at a site change. A gap confined to three forms is a ten-minute fix.
MarqIQ’s integration audit produces that read from a live connection to the CRM, and the data audit does the same from an opportunity export if you would prefer not to connect anything yet.
What a realistic target looks like
You will not get Direct to zero, and a vendor who promises that is selling something. A B2B site with sound tracking typically still sees a meaningful minority of conversions with no recoverable source, because some buyers really do type the address. The goal is that the remainder is real, and that your best channels have stopped hiding inside it.
Quick answers
What does Direct / None mean in lead source reports?
It means the tool had no referrer, no campaign parameters and no stored source for that visit. It is a missing value shown as a channel, not evidence that the person typed your URL.
Why is my direct traffic so high?
The common causes are cookies expiring before the buyer returns (Safari caps script-written cookies at seven days), redirects stripping UTM parameters, forms on a different domain, links opened from apps that send no referrer, and imported contacts.
How do I reduce Direct in HubSpot or Salesforce?
Store first touch on the server so it survives cookie expiry, write it onto the contact record, make sure every form carries the hidden source fields, and label imported or sales-created contacts by creation method.
