Fix a source field that is mostly empty
Work the blank down in order: first what you already hold that answers for those people, then the point of entry that keeps producing more, and only then a new field. That order matters, because filling in the past while the door stays open means doing it again next quarter. To understand what the blank is doing to your channel numbers before you fix it, read Why your traffic shows as Direct first.
Before you start
Connect the tool and let one sync finish. The Source truth analysis reads MarqIQ’s synced copy of every person in that tool, counted in the database rather than sampled.
Permissions required
Measuring needs no special role. Applying a change set to HubSpot or Marketo needs the Workspace Admin role.
Tip
Do not start by creating a field. MarqIQ checks what this workspace already holds for exactly the people who are blank, and names the fields it looked at, so a team that built Lead Source four years ago is not told to build it again.
Get the real number first
Open Insights in the left-hand menu, then Analysis.
Pick the tool along the top.
Open Source truth.
Source truth is one of the analyses in the row of buttons under the tool pills.
Read the four tiles at the top.
People, With a source, Different values and Customers. With a source is the share of people whose source field holds anything at all, measured on every person synced from that tool inside the date range the page is set to.
Read the first finding under What is distorting your channel numbers.
Where enough people are blank it is titled with the share — “38% of people have nothing in “Lead Source””— and its first line gives both numbers: “4,812 of 12,660 people in HubSpot have nothing in “Lead Source”.”
Check whether it is getting better or worse.
Where at least 30 people were created in the last 90 days, a second line compares that group against the whole: “Among the 1,140 created in the last 90 days it is 12%, so it is getting better.” A rise of more than a quarter reads getting worse and adds a Still happening badge; a fall to under 60% of the overall share reads getting better; anything between reads holding steady.
When the finding is not there at all
The blank finding appears only when at least 20 people are blank and they are at least 5% of the people in scope. Below either bar MarqIQ raises nothing, because a fix built on a dozen records is not worth your afternoon. Read the With a source tile instead; it is always shown.
Take care
The tile and the finding both obey the date range the page is set to. Quote the range with the figure. “38% have no source” means nothing to a board; “38% of the 12,660 people created this year” cannot be misread.
Step one: use what you already hold
This is the part most teams skip. MarqIQ looks at up to eight other fields in the same tool that it reads as playing a source, medium, campaign or source-detail role, counts how full each one is for exactly the people who are blank, and reports what they say.
The evidence reads like this, with its own denominator every time: “You already hold the answer for most of them. “UTM Source (First Touch)” names a real channel on 3,100 of these 4,812 people (64%): google (1,420), linkedin (760), newsletter (500), partner (420).”
- A field is only named when it names a real channel for at least five of the affected people and at least one in ten of them. A field that is full of catch-all values clears neither bar and is not recommended.
- A second field is named when it does the same for at least five people and at least one in twenty.
- Where more than one field helps, a third line gives the union across the best three: “Taken together, your existing fields name a channel for 3,940 of the 4,812 (82%).”
- Where MarqIQ captured the first visit itself for at least five of them, it says so on its own line — that is the strongest evidence there is, because MarqIQ watched the arrival.
- Where nothing helps, MarqIQ says so and lists the fields it looked at, so “nothing helps” arrives with its working.
- Whatever is left over is named as a number: “That leaves 872 with no answer in any field.” Those cannot be repaired from data you hold.
Note
This whole block needs at least 20 blank people and at least one other candidate field in the tool. Below that MarqIQ reports the blank and skips the rescue, because there is nothing to search.
HubSpot’s own source field is a special case
Where the field MarqIQ reads is one of HubSpot’s own analytics source properties, MarqIQ marks it as one you cannot meaningfully rewrite, and the advice changes: report channels from your own field wherever HubSpot’s says nothing, rather than trying to fill HubSpot’s. The finding says which field to read instead and for how many people it answers.
Step two: fill what can honestly be filled
MarqIQ can fill empty first-touch fields for you on HubSpot and Marketo, as a reviewed change set that never replaces a value. Know exactly which fields that covers before you rely on it.
| What it fills | Where the value comes from | What it does not touch |
|---|---|---|
| Five of your mapped first-touch fields: UTM source, medium, campaign, term and content | What MarqIQ recorded when that person first arrived on your site, matched to the person by email address | Any field that already holds a value. Your first-touch entry URL, current URL and referral URL are not filled by this one, because MarqIQ’s capture is read for the five UTM fields only |
| All eight mapped first-touch fields: the same five, plus entry URL, current URL and referral URL | That person’s matching most-recent field, where first touch is empty and the most-recent medium holds a value | Anyone whose first-touch medium is already filled, and any field whose most-recent twin is itself empty |
Take care
Neither operation writes to a field such as Lead Source. MarqIQ fills the first-touch fields you mapped under Tool Operations › Field Mapping, and nothing else. If the field your reports read is a separate picklist, filling it from another of your own fields is a bulk update inside your tool — MarqIQ measures it and tells you which field to copy from, and does not make that change for you.
Map your first-touch fields under Tool Operations › Field Mapping.
Where a field is not mapped, MarqIQ proposes against its own default name and your tool refuses every item, because no such field exists there.
Open Tool Operations and click HubSpot or Marketo.
Click Show me what would change on Fill empty first-touch fields from what MarqIQ captured.
Run this one first. It matches a person by email address against the oldest 50,000 form fills MarqIQ has recorded, so a person with no email in your tool is never matched.
Read the summary line and the item table.
The summary states how many empty fields would be filled, on how many people, and ends with No existing value is touched. A set holds at most 500 changes and says how many more are waiting.
Ask a Workspace Admin to approve and apply it.
Run Fill empty first-touch fields from the most recent touch afterwards for whoever is left.
It is weaker evidence — the most recent touch is the first touch only for someone with a single recorded visit — so it goes second.
Step three: shut the door that keeps making more
Filling the past is worth a morning. Stopping the blank is worth a quarter. List every way a person gets into the tool and give each one a rule.
- Every form: add MarqIQ’s hidden fields, so a fill carries the source with it.
- Every import template: add a source column and refuse a file that leaves it out. Imports are the usual culprit, because nobody thinks of an import as a channel.
- Every integration that creates people: map its own source value onto your list.
- Manual creation: make the field required, with a short fixed list, so a salesperson adding a contact has to choose.
- Paid links: build them in UTM Builder so every campaign link is tagged the same way.
Tip
Where MarqIQ found a field that says how these people got in — an import, an integration, the API, a rep’s inbox — it names the biggest of those doors when that door accounts for at least three in ten of the affected people. Fix that one first; it is the largest single win available.
Step four: label the rest honestly
You will not reach zero, and chasing it produces worse data than admitting the gap. Whatever is still empty after the three steps above gets one honest label — MarqIQ suggests “Unknown (before 2026)” — so the gap is visible, stops growing, and shrinks as a share every quarter.
Keep exactly one such value. Two of them is the problem in the next article along: a catch-all bucket that passes every “is the source filled in?” check while telling you nothing.
What the analysis will not do
- It changes nothing in your tool. The Source truth screen is a read; every fix on it is something you or a change set does afterwards.
- It offers no list of the affected records. The counts are exact and countable in your tool from the See it for yourself line under each finding, and there is no click-through to the individual people from this analysis.
- It reads one tool at a time. A person who exists in two connected tools is counted once in each.
- It reads the field MarqIQ recognises as the source for that workspace, chosen by what the field holds rather than by name. The How this was worked out panel at the foot of the page says which field and why.
If it did not work
The page says the tool has no field that records where a person came from
Why: Nothing in that tool holds values MarqIQ can read as a source.
Fix: Read the line under the headline. Where you hold fields that come close, MarqIQ names them with how full each one is, and you choose the right one under Field Intelligence. Where it names none, one field for “where did this person first come from”, with a short fixed list, is the decision everything else depends on.
The blank finding is missing although plenty of people look blank
Why: It needs at least 20 blank people and at least 5% of the people in scope. The date range on the page can also put most of them outside the count.
Fix: Widen the range, then read the With a source tile, which is shown whatever the numbers are.
MarqIQ names no field that could repair these people
Why: Either the workspace holds no other field playing a source role, or every candidate is full of catch-all values, which do not count as naming a channel.
Fix: Read the list of fields MarqIQ says it looked at. Where the right field is missing from that list, check it under Field Intelligence; a field filled on almost nobody is not considered.
A green message reads Nothing to change when you propose the fill
Why: No person in that tool has an empty first-touch field that the operation could fill.
Fix: Nothing for that operation. Run the other one, and check under Tool Operations › Field Mapping that your first-touch fields point at the right properties.
The change set filled first-touch fields and With a source did not move
Why: The field the analysis reads as your source is not one of the first-touch fields the operation fills.
Fix: Read which field the analysis names in How this was worked out. Filling a different field is a bulk update inside your tool, working from the field MarqIQ named in step one.
The share got worse after you fixed the forms
Why: Fixing capture today does not fill in the people who arrived last year, and the overall share is dominated by the past.
Fix: Read the last-90-days line rather than the overall share. That is the one that tells you whether what you changed is working.
The figures have not moved since the sync finished
Why: The analysis is cached for five minutes, per tool and per date range.
Fix: Wait five minutes and reload, or run a sync and come back when it has finished.
