Connect Google Ads

Last updated 25 September 2026Available onFree TrialProBusinessEnterpriseGoogle Ads needs Pro or above, and a Free Trial workspace counts as Pro for this. It uses one of your plan’s connected-tool slots. Pro includes two tools besides Google Tag Manager and allows one tool per category, so a Pro workspace cannot hold Google Ads and Meta Ads or LinkedIn Ads at the same time — all three sit under Advertising. Data sync is in early access: connecting stores your credentials, and no Google Ads data reaches your reports yet.

You collect three values from Google — your Customer ID, a developer token and an OAuth refresh token — and paste them into MarqIQ. Google Ads is an early-access data source, so MarqIQ keeps the credentials and does not pull campaigns, spend or clicks from them yet. If you need paid-channel numbers today, tag your ad links instead and read See which channels produced the most leads.

Before you start

Nothing syncs from Google Ads yet

The Google Ads page carries a banner that reads "Data sync for Google Ads is in early access", and an Early access pill sits beside the name at the top of the same page. Connecting stores and checks your credentials, and automated data sync for this source is not live, so Google Ads figures do not appear in your reports. MarqIQ enables your connection on its own when sync ships. Connect now if you want to be ready; do not connect expecting numbers this week.

Plan required

Google Ads is a Pro-and-above tool. On Starter the card in Explore Integrations reads Upgrade to connect rather than Connect, and a request sent past the button is refused with the plan named. A workspace whose subscription has lapsed is read-only and cannot connect anything.

Permissions required

You need a Google account with access to the Google Ads account you want to report on, and a developer token, which lives in a Google Ads manager account. In MarqIQ you need a workspace that is not read-only; MarqIQ does not ask for a particular role to connect a data source.

  • Your Customer ID — the ten-digit number at the top of the Google Ads screen, written 123-456-7890.
  • Your Developer Token — issued to a Google Ads manager account, in API Center.
  • An OAuth Refresh Token for the Google account that can see that Customer ID. The hint under the field says "Generated via the Google Ads OAuth consent flow".

Collect the three values from Google

MarqIQ does not run Google’s sign-in flow for you. You produce the refresh token yourself and paste it in, the same way you would for any other Google API.

  1. Sign in to Google Ads with an account that can see the campaigns you want to report on.

  2. Copy the Customer ID shown at the top of the screen.

It is ten digits, written 123-456-7890, which is the format the field’s placeholder shows. MarqIQ stores it as you type it and names the connection "Google Ads — 123-456-7890", so paste the account you actually mean.

  3. Open API Center in your Google Ads manager account.

A developer token belongs to a manager account, not to a single advertising account, so a standard account has no API Center and no token to copy. Google’s own setup guide opens from the API docs link at the top right of the MarqIQ page, at developers.google.com/google-ads/api/docs/start

  4. Copy the developer token from that screen.

  5. Generate an OAuth refresh token for the Google account you signed in with.

Google’s OAuth 2.0 Playground at developers.google.com/oauthplayground issues one: open the gear icon, tick Use your own OAuth credentials, paste the client id and client secret from your own Google Cloud project, and authorise the Google Ads API scope.

  6. Copy the refresh token, not the access token.

An access token expires within about an hour. MarqIQ’s field is OAuth Refresh Token because that is the long-lived half of the pair.

Connect it in MarqIQ

  1. Open Integrations in MarqIQ.

  2. Click Add more to open Explore Integrations.

Google Ads sits under Advertising. The search box is labelled Search integrations… if you would rather type the name.

  3. Click Connect on the Google Ads card.

  4. Paste your account number into Customer ID.

  5. Paste your token into Developer Token.

  6. Paste your refresh token into OAuth Refresh Token.

  7. Click Connect.

All three fields are required, and each carries a red asterisk. MarqIQ checks that each one has something in it, encrypts the three values together and saves them against your workspace. The button reads Connecting… while it saves, and any refusal appears in red just below the three fields.

MarqIQ does not call Google at this point. A typo in the developer token is stored exactly as typed and is not found until a sync engine exists to use it.

What the connection card shows

Once saved, the page reads Connection active and lists your Customer ID in full, with Developer Token and OAuth Refresh Token masked down to their last four characters. There is no date beside the connection, because nothing has synced — MarqIQ deliberately leaves the last-sync time empty rather than stamping it at connect time and reading as though records had arrived.

What comes across once it is connected

Nothing, for now. The Google Ads page says so in its own banner: connecting stores and validates your credentials, but automated data sync for this source is not live yet, so Google Ads data does not appear in your reports until it ships.

The Available in Reporting panel on the same page names the fields Google Ads is being built to contribute. Read it as the plan, not as what is in your reports today.

What connecting Google Ads does not unlock

  • No record sync. Google Ads has no sync engine, so there is no Sync button for it and nothing lands in your workspace’s store.
  • No data audit. The audit reads the records a tool has synced, and Google Ads syncs none.
  • None of the nine analyses — Source truth, Field discipline, Forecast accuracy, Audience health, Lead scoring, Funnel, Form fills, Email, Automations. Each runs on people and deals synced from a CRM or a marketing-automation tool.
  • No field mapping and no UTM field creation. Those belong to the CRM and marketing-automation categories; Google Ads is an advertising source.
  • No Tool Operations. Creating properties, writing hidden fields onto live forms, building workflows and backfilling records all happen inside a CRM or a marketing-automation tool, never in an advertising account.

Tip

On Data Sources a connected Google Ads row sits under Advertising & Analytics, reads Connected, and shows the words Mapping only · no record sync yet where a syncing tool shows a Sync button. Hover those words and MarqIQ says Google Ads is connected for field mapping only, that it does not pull Google Ads records yet, and that there is nothing to sync or audit from it. Only the first half of that hover applies here: Google Ads has no field mapping either, because mapping is limited to the CRM and marketing-automation tools.

What MarqIQ writes back to Google Ads

  • Nothing. MarqIQ creates no campaign, changes no budget or bid, pauses nothing and uploads no conversion.
  • The connection is three credentials held encrypted in your workspace, and no request has been made to Google with them.
  • Disconnecting purges the stored credentials at once and keeps the connection itself, marked disconnected, so the name you connected under is still there when you come back.

Disconnect Google Ads

  1. Open Integrations and click the Google Ads card.

  2. Click Disconnect.

  3. Confirm the Disconnect Google Ads? prompt.

The credentials are deleted immediately, the connection is marked disconnected, and the action is written to your activity log. The slot it held is free for another tool straight away.

If it did not work

"Missing required field: Customer ID"

Why: One of the three fields is empty, or holds only spaces. MarqIQ names the fields by the labels on the screen, and switches to "Missing required fields: Developer Token, OAuth Refresh Token" when more than one is blank.

Fix: Fill in every field the message names, then click Connect again. All three are marked with a red asterisk on the form.

"Google Ads is part of the Pro plan — this workspace is on Starter."

Why: Google Ads is a Pro-and-above tool and your workspace is below that. The card shows Upgrade to connect for the same reason.

Fix: Move to Pro or above. A Free Trial workspace already ranks with Pro, so a trial does not hit this.

"Pro includes 2 tools besides Google Tag Manager, and this workspace has connected 2 … Disconnect one, or move up a plan."

Why: Your plan’s tool allowance is used up. The message lists the tools that are using it. Google Tag Manager never counts towards the allowance, and neither do AI provider keys.

Fix: Disconnect a tool you no longer read from, or move to Business, which allows four. Reconnecting a tool that is already connected is always allowed, so being at the limit never blocks you from replacing an expired credential.

"Pro allows 1 tool from this category, and Meta Ads is already connected."

Why: Google Ads, Meta Ads and LinkedIn Ads are all in the Advertising category, and Pro allows one tool per category.

Fix: Disconnect the other advertising tool, or move to Business and above, which allow more than one from the same category.

"This workspace is read-only. Renew the subscription to connect tools."

Why: The subscription has lapsed. A read-only workspace can be read but nothing new can be connected.

Fix: Renew the subscription from your billing settings, then connect again.

"Unauthorized"

Why: Your session has ended, so MarqIQ has no workspace to save the credentials against. It is the first thing the connect route checks, before your plan and before the three fields.

Fix: Reload the page, sign in again, and paste the three values once more. Nothing was saved, so you are not left half connected.

The form says "Could not connect" and names nothing

Why: That is the wording the page falls back to when the reply carries no message of its own. Every refusal listed above names itself, so this one means the request did not reach the connect route intact.

Fix: Reload the page and try once more. If it repeats, check that nothing on your network is blocking requests to MarqIQ, then contact support with the time you tried.

The button stays on Connecting… and no message appears

Why: The reply never arrived, or arrived in a form the page could not read, so the button was never released.

Fix: Reload the page. The form reads your connection again on load, so it tells you whether anything was saved before you paste the three values a second time.

Google Ads says Connected and every Google Ads figure is empty

Why: Sync for this source is in early access. The credentials are stored and no data is pulled, so there is nothing behind the connection to report on.

Fix: Nothing to do on your side — MarqIQ enables the connection when sync ships. In the meantime, tag your ad links so paid traffic is attributed by the tracking script instead.
