Send agent reports to Slack
An agent can post its report to one public Slack channel and send each recipient their own copy as a direct message, beside email and the inbox. This article connects your Slack workspace, picks a channel on an agent, turns DMs on, disconnects, and says exactly what MarqIQ can and cannot see in Slack. To set an agent up first, read Get the Monday Brief by email.
Before you start
Permissions required
You are a workspace admin in MarqIQ (Edit on Workspace Settings) and may install apps in your Slack workspace, or can ask a Slack admin to approve the install.
Note
MarqIQ posts to public channels only. A private channel is not offered in this release.
Connect your Slack workspace
Open Agents in the left-hand menu.
The Slack card near the top says whether Slack is connected, and to which workspace.
Click Connect Slack.
Slack opens and asks you to pick a workspace and approve the MarqIQ app. The approval lists the six things the app may do; the next section says what each is for.
Click Allow in Slack.
You land back on Agents with a sentence saying which Slack workspace is connected. MarqIQ keeps one connection per MarqIQ workspace.
Note
If the card says Slack is not set up on this server, the MarqIQ deployment has no Slack app configured; that is for MarqIQ, not for you. Write to support.
Post an agent to a channel
Open the agent under Agents and click Change (or set up a new one).
Pick the channel under Post the shared sections to a Slack channel.
The list holds your workspace’s public channels by name; type part of a name to narrow it. If the list says only the first 1,000 are shown, the workspace has more, and narrowing by name is the way to find yours.
Click Save changes.
From the next run, the shared sections of the report are posted to that channel, with an Open the report in MarqIQ button. MarqIQ does not need to join the channel.
Note
A channel gets the sections everyone may see, never a person’s own lines: the Pipeline Inspector’s per-rep lists go only to that rep. A long report is posted as a thread under the first message, part by part; nothing is cut out.
Get your own copy as a Slack DM
Two switches must both be on: the admin ticks Slack DM beside your name on the agent, and you keep Slack on under Account settings › Notifications. Both are on by default once Slack is connected; a workspace admin cannot turn your Slack switch on for you.
Ask the admin to tick Slack DM beside your name on the agent, under Who receives it.
Check Account settings › Notifications.
Each agent you receive has a Slack switch beside Email and In-app; Every agent has a master switch. Quiet hours hold Slack DMs as they hold emails.
Note
MarqIQ finds you in Slack by the email you sign in to MarqIQ with, once, and keeps your Slack user id. If no Slack user has that email, the delivery says could not be messaged (no Slack user with that email) under the agent’s run, and nothing is sent.
Disconnect, or remove the app in Slack
Click Disconnect on the Slack card under Agents.
MarqIQ asks Slack to revoke its access, then stops every Slack delivery; each one is recorded as skipped with the date. Channels picked on agents stay as they were and post again when you reconnect.
Removing the MarqIQ app from the Slack side (Slack’s Manage apps) does the same: Slack tells MarqIQ, and the connection is marked disconnected within seconds.
What MarqIQ can and cannot see in Slack
| Permission the app asks for | What MarqIQ uses it for |
|---|---|
| Send messages as the app | Posting a report to the channel you picked, and the DMs. |
| Send messages to public channels it is not in | Posting to the channel without joining it. |
| Start direct messages | Opening the DM with a recipient. |
| View basic information about public channels | The channel list in the picker: names and ids, nothing posted in them. |
| View people in the workspace, and their email addresses | Finding a recipient by the email they sign in to MarqIQ with. The lookup is one call per person, and only the Slack user id is kept. |
- MarqIQ never reads messages in any channel or DM: no permission for that is asked for, and Slack would refuse it.
- MarqIQ keeps, per MarqIQ workspace: the Slack workspace’s id and name, the app’s bot token (encrypted at rest), the scopes granted, who connected it and when, and when it was disconnected. Per person: the Slack user id found by email.
- What goes to Slack is the report as you see it in MarqIQ: counts, money figures with the count each rests on, deal names with a link into your tool, your colleagues’ names as deal owners. Never a contact’s name, email address or phone number.
- The buttons in a message only open links. Nothing in Slack can approve, apply or change anything in your tools.
If it did not work
A run’s delivery says Slack is not connected to this workspace
Why: Nobody has connected Slack yet, or it was disconnected; the agent still has a channel or a DM set.
Fix: A workspace admin clicks Connect Slack under Agents. The next run posts again.
The delivery says the channel was not found in Slack or the channel is archived
Why: The channel was deleted, archived or made private after it was picked.
Fix: Open the agent, Change, and pick another channel.
The delivery says MarqIQ is not a member of that channel and cannot post there
Why: A Slack workspace setting stops apps posting to channels they are not in.
Fix: Invite the MarqIQ app to the channel in Slack (type its name after an @ in the channel), or pick a public channel without that restriction.
The delivery says could not be messaged (no Slack user with that email)
Why: The person’s MarqIQ sign-in email is not the email of any active Slack user in the connected workspace.
Fix: Give the person the same email in both, or leave them on email and in-app.
The delivery says Slack asked MarqIQ to slow down twice; not sent this time
Why: Slack limited posting to that channel at that moment; MarqIQ waited once and tried once more.
Fix: Nothing to change. The next run posts as usual; use Run now if you need it sooner.
The delivery says Slack no longer accepts MarqIQ’s connection to this workspace
Why: The app was removed in Slack, or Slack revoked its token.
Fix: Connect Slack again under Agents.
